Listed in the 1936 school archive book, one of the most memorable fundraisers of this decade was the “basketball on donkey back” game. On Friday, March 27, 1936, for a thirty-five-cent admission, one could watch teachers and students play basketball on real donkeys. The teachers defeated the varsity quintet in a basketball comedy in the school gymnasium. The rubber-shod donkeys were led onto the court of combat with given names like Mae West, Al Capone and Lazy Bones. The book stated, “Both teams were costumed for the occasion and their initial appearance on the cover was the cause of an outburst of laughter. The balking and bucking of the donkeys along with the frequent spills, head on collisions and the characteristic cussedness of the cutters added to the hilarity of the evening and when one individual on the faculty embarrassingly lost his pants, the gymnasium rocked.” Seventy years later, Ray Ross, class of 1939, recalled being at the game and enjoying the event.
